The Job Brief - Skype Interviews

With technology increasingly playing a part in recruitment, more employers and recruitment agencies are conducting interviews via Skype.  The impression you make on your Skype interview can be just as powerful as it would be in person.

Getting started

Does your Skype address and profile photo present a professional image? If not, use your name as your Skype address where possible, and upload a professional profile photo.

Check your technology

Practice with family or friends so you become familiar and comfortable using Skype.  Make sure you have the right Skype connection, that your camera and sound are working, and you have good lighting (natural is best).  Ensure your camera is at eye level.  If possible, use ultra-fast broadband as this will improve your connection and avoid buffering.

Have a back-up plan

Consider what your options will be should technical problems arise. It is a good idea is to get a cell phone number from the interviewer prior to the meeting so you can call them directly if either of you experience any difficulties.

Consider your surroundings

Choose a room that is free from distractions (phones ringing, visitors etc), and set yourself up in a clear, uncluttered space. A plain wall as a backdrop is ideal.

Presentation

Present yourself professionally, as if you were attending the interview in person.  Solid neutral colours, such as black, grey and blue are best to wear, as these colours present well on screen. On your test calls, trial different clothes and work out your best camera angle.

During the interview

It is important you build a rapport with the interviewer. Make eye contact, smile often and remain focused. Ensure you look directly at the camera to make eye contact.  It’s a natural tendency to look at the screen, however you should focus on the camera which is at the top of the screen.

Take your time before responding to each question to ensure the interviewer has finished and you fully understand the question. If you are wanting to refer to your interview preparation notes the best place for these is above your screen and the camera.

At the end of the interview

Thank the interviewer and ask what the next step will be.  If you want the job, now is the time to express your interest. Stay seated (and quiet) until the interviewer has disconnected the call and left the screen.

Update your GBL consultant

After your Skype interview contact your GBL consultant and let them know your interest in the role and availability to meet in person.

Best of luck!
